Yellow Polyp Coral (Parazoanthus gracilis) – Description & Care Guide
Description:
The Yellow Polyp is a classic, bright-yellow soft coral known for its long, slender tentacles and golden-to-lemon coloration that brightens any section of the reef. Colonies form dense carpets of polyps that sway gently in the current, creating natural movement and a warm pop of color against purples, greens, and blues. Yellow Polyps are hardy, fast-spreading, and beginner-friendly, and they're one of the most reliable ways to add color and motion to a reef system.
Care Guide:
- Tank Size: Suitable for nano (10+ gallons) and larger reef tanks.
- Temperament: Peaceful, but can spread quickly and grow over neighboring corals.
- Lighting: Low to moderate (PAR 50-150); tolerant of a wide range of lighting.
- Flow: Moderate, enough to keep detritus off the colony and allow polyps to sway without being blasted closed.
- Placement:
- Best placed on rockwork, frag racks, or isolated islands to manage spreading.
- Works well in lower and mid-level areas of the tank.
- Feeding:
- Relies partly on photosynthesis via zooxanthellae, but benefits more from feeding than most zoanthids.
- Readily accepts:
- Reef amino acids
- Phytoplankton and zooplankton
- Small meaty foods (e.g., frozen cyclops, rotifers, finely chopped mysis)
- Powdered coral foods (e.g., Reef Roids)
- Regular target feeding promotes faster growth and fuller polyp extension.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 74-78°F (23-26°C)
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Salinity: 1.025-1.026
- Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1300-1350 ppm
- Nitrate & Phosphate: Low but detectable (NO₃: 5-10 ppm, PO₄: 0.03-0.07 ppm)
Compatibility:
- Very peaceful and suitable near most corals.
- Best kept with other soft corals, zoanthids, and non-aggressive LPS.
- Avoid placement near aggressive corals such as Galaxea, Torch, or Hydnophora.
- Some fish (e.g., certain angelfish and butterflyfish) may nip at the polyps.
Special Considerations:
- Growth Management: Yellow Polyps spread readily; isolated rocks keep them from overtaking the reef.
- Feeding Response: Colonies that are fed regularly grow noticeably faster and show fuller extension than light-only colonies.
- Closed Polyps: Polyps may stay closed for a few days after moving or acclimation. This is normal while they adjust.
- Palytoxin Warning: May contain palytoxins; always wear gloves and eye protection when handling or fragging.
Summary:
The Yellow Polyp is a hardy, fast-growing, and vibrantly colored coral, perfect for adding bright yellow color and natural movement to reef tanks. With stable water conditions, low-to-moderate lighting, and regular feeding, Yellow Polyps will spread into lush, glowing colonies, making them an excellent choice for beginners and experienced reefers alike.
