The Tailspot Blenny is a small, peaceful marine fish known for its charming personality and algae-eating habits. It has a slender body with a mix of brown and yellow hues, a characteristic dark spot at the base of its tail, and an expressive face with large eyes. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this fish is a favorite among reef keepers due to its hardiness and ability to control algae growth.

Care Guide:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 10 gallons, but 20+ gallons is recommended for better stability.
  • Temperament: Peaceful, but may be territorial toward similar-shaped fish (e.g., other blennies). Generally compatible with most community reef fish.
  • Diet: Herbivorous – primarily feeds on algae, seaweed (nori), spirulina-based pellets, and prepared herbivore foods. Should be supplemented with high-quality plant-based diets.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 74-80°F (23-27°C)
    • pH: 8.1-8.4
    • Salinity: 1.023-1.025
    • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
    • Nitrate: <10 ppm
  • Reef Safe? Yes, does not harm corals or invertebrates.
  • Tank Setup: Needs plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Prefers small caves or crevices to retreat into when feeling threatened.
  • Compatibility: Best with peaceful community fish such as clownfish, gobies, and wrasses. Avoid housing with large predatory fish or aggressive blennies.

The Tailspot Blenny is a fantastic addition to reef tanks, offering both utility and personality. Its small size, peaceful nature, and algae-eating habits make it an excellent choice for nano and larger reef aquariums.
