Description:

The Springeri Damsel (Chrysiptera springeri) is a striking marine fish known for its deep blue body and electric blue highlights. Native to the Indo-Pacific, particularly around Indonesia and the Philippines, this hardy species is popular among saltwater aquarists due to its vibrant coloration, ease of care, and utility in controlling pest populations like flatworms in reef tanks.

Care Guide:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons, though larger tanks (50+ gallons) help manage territorial behavior.
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks. Best kept with similar-sized fish that can hold their own.
  • Diet: Omnivorous – thrives on a varied diet of high-quality pellets, frozen foods (brine shrimp, mysis shrimp), and occasional vegetable matter.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 74-80°F (23-27°C)
    • pH: 8.1-8.4
    • Salinity: 1.023-1.025
    • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
    • Nitrate: <10 ppm
  • Reef Safe? Yes, generally safe with corals and invertebrates.
  • Tank Setup: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves for hiding spots to reduce stress and aggression.
  • Compatibility: Best kept with other hardy, semi-aggressive fish like clownfish, wrasses, and certain tangs. Avoid very timid or slow-moving tank mates.

Springeri Damsels are a fantastic choice for reef aquariums due to their stunning coloration, pest control abilities, and resilience. However, their territorial nature should be considered when planning tank mates and aquascape.
