The Orange Setosa (Montipora setosa) is a stunning SPS (small-polyp stony) coral known for its bright orange to pinkish coloration and unique branching, plating, or encrusting growth patterns. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this Montipora species is hardier than some other SPS corals, making it an excellent choice for reef keepers transitioning from LPS to SPS corals.

Care Guide:

  • Tank Size: Suitable for nano (20+ gallons) and larger reef tanks, but best results in 50+ gallons for stable parameters.
  • Temperament: Peaceful – does not have sweeper tentacles but should be given space to grow.
  • Lighting: Moderate to high (PAR 200-350); thrives under LED, T5, or metal halide lighting.
  • Flow: Moderate to high – needs strong, indirect flow to prevent detritus buildup and promote healthy growth.
  • Placement: Best placed on mid to upper rockwork, ensuring space for its unpredictable growth pattern.
  • Feeding:
    • Primarily relies on photosynthesis via its zooxanthellae, but can benefit from:
      • Occasional broadcast feeding of reef amino acids, phytoplankton, or SPS coral foods.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 74-78°F (23-26°C)
    • pH: 8.1-8.4
    • Salinity: 1.024-1.026
    • Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH (stable levels are crucial)
    • Calcium: 400-450 ppm
    • Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
    • Nitrate & Phosphate: Low but detectable (NO₃: 5-10 ppm, PO₄: 0.02-0.07 ppm) – too high can lead to browning, too low can cause starvation.
  • Compatibility:
    • Peaceful coral, does well with other SPS corals, but should not be placed too close to aggressive LPS corals like torches, hammers, or galaxea, which can sting it.
    • Requires space to grow, as it can encrust, branch, or plate unpredictably.

Summary:

The Orange Setosa Montipora is a vibrant, hardy, and visually striking SPS coral that adds a bold pop of color to any reef. With stable water conditions, strong flow, and proper lighting, it will thrive and grow into a unique structure, becoming a centerpiece in your tank.
