Zoanthids, often called "Zoas," are one of the most popular and colorful soft corals in the reef-keeping hobby. They come in a vast range of colors and patterns, from bright neon to deep, rich hues. These hardy, fast-growing corals originate from Indo-Pacific reefs and are great for both beginner and advanced reef keepers. Their ease of care, adaptability, and ability to create stunning "zoa gardens" make them a must-have for reef aquariums.
Care Guide:
- Tank Size: Suitable for nano (10+ gallons) and larger reef tanks.
- Temperament: Peaceful – does not have sweeper tentacles but can spread rapidly and overgrow nearby corals.
- Lighting: Low to moderate (PAR 80-200); can adapt to higher light but may change coloration.
- Flow: Moderate to high – needs good flow to prevent detritus buildup and encourage healthy polyp extension.
-
Placement:
- Best placed on rockwork or frag racks, allowing space for growth.
- Can also be placed on island structures to prevent overgrowth in the main reef.
-
Feeding:
- Primarily rely on photosynthesis via their zooxanthellae.
- Can benefit from target or broadcast feeding with reef amino acids, phytoplankton, or powdered coral foods to enhance growth and coloration.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 74-78°F (23-26°C)
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Salinity: 1.024-1.026
- Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
- Nitrate & Phosphate: Low but detectable (NO₃: 5-10 ppm, PO₄: 0.02-0.07 ppm) – too much can encourage algae growth, too little can stunt coral health.
-
Compatibility:
- Very peaceful, can be placed near most corals.
- Best kept with other soft corals or LPS corals that do not compete aggressively.
- Avoid placement near aggressive LPS or SPS corals that may sting them.
Special Considerations:
- Some Zoanthids contain palytoxins, a highly toxic substance that can be harmful if ingested or handled improperly. Always wear gloves and eye protection when fragging or handling them, and ensure proper ventilation.
Summary:
Zoanthids are hardy, fast-growing, and highly colorful soft corals, perfect for all levels of reef keepers. With stable water conditions, moderate flow, and occasional feeding, they will flourish and form stunning "zoa gardens" that add movement and vibrancy to any reef tank.
