The Maroon Clownfish is one of the most striking and boldest clownfish species, known for its deep red to maroon coloration with three thick white or gold stripes. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this species is the largest and most aggressive clownfish, making it better suited for experienced aquarists. Maroon Clownfish are also well known for their strong territorial behavior, especially when paired or hosting an anemone.

Care Guide:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a single, but 50+ gallons is recommended for a pair or mixed community.
  • Temperament: Aggressive – one of the most territorial clownfish species, especially when defending a host anemone.
  • Diet: Omnivorous – thrives on a variety of foods, including:
    • High-quality marine pellets and flakes
    • Frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and krill
    • Occasional algae-based foods or spirulina
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 74-80°F (23-27°C)
    • pH: 8.1-8.4
    • Salinity: 1.023-1.025
    • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
    • Nitrate: <10 ppm for best health
  • Flow: Moderate – adaptable, but prefers areas with gentle to moderate currents.
  • Reef Safe? Yes, does not harm corals or invertebrates but may knock over unsecured frags when hosting.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Does not require an anemone, but if available, it may host one.
    • Common anemone pairings: Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) – one of the few anemones hardy enough for its rough hosting behavior.
    • Provide plenty of rockwork and open swimming space.
  • Compatibility:
    • Best kept alone or in a mated pair – highly aggressive toward other clownfish species.
    • Pairs well with semi-aggressive to aggressive tank mates like tangs, large wrasses, and dwarf angelfish.
    • Avoid keeping with docile fish like firefish, small gobies, and seahorses, as they may be bullied.

Special Considerations:

  • Size & Growth: One of the largest clownfish species, growing up to 6 inches.
  • Pairing: Can be paired, but introduce a much smaller juvenile to reduce aggression from the dominant female.
  • Aggression Management: Best housed with similarly aggressive tank mates to avoid territorial disputes.

Summary:

The Maroon Clownfish is a bold, beautiful, and highly aggressive clownfish, ideal for aquarists looking for a larger, personality-filled fish in a well-planned reef or FOWLR tank. With a spacious environment, careful tank mate selection, and a varied diet, it can thrive and become a dominant showpiece in any marine aquarium. However, due to its aggression and territorial nature, it is best suited for experienced saltwater hobbyists.
