Red Mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) are iconic coastal plants native to Florida’s tidal estuaries and backwaters, prized for their unique stilt-root structure and nutrient-absorbing capabilities. In reef aquariums and refugiums, these mangroves help stabilize water quality by removing nitrate, phosphate, and other excess nutrients from the system. With their glossy green leaves and woody stalks, Florida Red Mangroves bring a natural, earthy vibe to any saltwater setup — while doubling as a living filter.

Care Guide:

Tank Size:
Great for nano tanks (10+ gallons), refugiums, or large lagoon-style reef systems with open tops or raised lighting.

Temperament:
Completely peaceful and non-invasive. Compatible with all corals, inverts, and fish.

Lighting:
High-intensity full-spectrum or plant grow lighting (6,500K–10,000K).
For best results, provide 10–12 hours of light daily with the leaves above water.

Flow:
Moderate — water should gently flow around roots to prevent detritus buildup.

Placement:

  • Leaves must remain above the waterline — do not submerge fully.

  • Stabilize stalks with rock crevices, foam tubing, or plant clips.

  • Can be rooted in sand, rubble, or allowed to free-float and root naturally.

Feeding:
Self-sustaining via photosynthesis and nutrient uptake. Optional iron dosing can boost leaf coloration and growth.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.023–1.026

  • Nitrate: 2–20 ppm

  • Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm

  • Iron (optional): 0.05–0.1 ppm for optimal growth

Compatibility:
Totally reef-safe. Excellent for:

  • Refugiums

  • Natural reef displays

  • Macroalgae tanks

  • Seahorse or lagoon-style systems

Special Considerations:

  • Slow growers — new leaf every few months, not fast like macroalgae.

  • Wipe leaves clean every 1–2 weeks to remove salt creep and allow efficient gas exchange.

  • Support young plants until roots develop and they can anchor on their own.

  • Great long-term nutrient export and natural display enhancement.

Summary:

Florida Red Mangroves are a stunning, functional addition to saltwater aquariums, blending beauty and biological benefit. These hardy plants remove excess nutrients, support biodiversity, and create a tranquil, rooted vibe that connects your reef to its coastal origins. Whether placed in a sump, lagoon, or rimless display, they add a unique layer of life to your system.
