The Joker Favia is a striking variety of Favia coral, known for its bold purple, green, and neon yellow coloration, reminiscent of the classic comic book character’s color scheme. This large-polyp stony (LPS) coral is highly sought after for its vibrant contrast and relatively easy care. Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Joker Favia is a slow-growing but resilient coral that thrives in stable reef environments.
Care Guide:
- Tank Size: Suitable for nano (20+ gallons) and larger reef tanks.
- Temperament: Moderate aggression – can extend sweeper tentacles at night, so it requires adequate spacing from other corals.
- Lighting: Moderate to low (PAR 75-150); too much light may cause color fading or bleaching.
- Flow: Moderate – enough to keep debris off but not too strong to damage its fleshy polyps.
- Placement: Best placed on lower rockwork or the sandbed, ensuring room for growth and avoiding coral warfare.
-
Feeding:
- Carnivorous – benefits from target feeding 1-2 times per week with mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or reef-specific coral foods.
- Also gains nutrients from photosynthesis via its zooxanthellae.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 74-78°F (23-26°C)
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Salinity: 1.024-1.026
- Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
- Nitrate & Phosphate: Low but detectable (NO₃: 5-10 ppm, PO₄: 0.03-0.07 ppm)
- Compatibility: Best kept with other LPS corals, but ensure 3-4 inches of space to prevent nighttime sweeper tentacle stings. Avoid placement near aggressive corals like torches, galaxea, or hydnophora.
Summary:
The Joker Favia is a colorful, hardy, and moderately aggressive LPS coral, perfect for adding dramatic contrast to a reef tank. With stable water conditions, moderate lighting, and occasional feeding, it will thrive and become a visually stunning centerpiece in any reef aquarium.
