The Sixline Wrasse is a small but strikingly colorful saltwater fish, featuring a vibrant orange body with six horizontal blue stripes and a signature eye-spot near the tail. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this fish is highly active and valued for its ability to control pests like bristle worms and flatworms in reef tanks.
Care Guide:
- Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons, though a larger tank (50+ gallons) helps manage aggression.
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive; can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks or when housed with other wrasses. Best introduced last in the stocking order.
- Diet: Carnivorous – thrives on a diet of high-quality frozen foods (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp), small crustaceans, and high-protein pellets or flakes.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 74-80°F (23-27°C)
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Salinity: 1.023-1.025
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <10 ppm
- Reef Safe? Yes, does not harm corals but may go after very small ornamental shrimp.
- Tank Setup: Needs plenty of live rock for hiding spots and hunting. Moderate to strong water flow is preferred. A tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent jumping.
- Compatibility: Best with semi-aggressive fish like clownfish, tangs, and larger wrasses. Avoid keeping with very docile fish or other small wrasses unless the tank is large enough to reduce territorial disputes.
The Sixline Wrasse is a fantastic addition to reef tanks due to its beauty, pest-control abilities, and hardy nature. However, its territorial tendencies require careful planning when selecting tank mates.
