The Darth Maul Favia is an eye-catching large-polyp stony (LPS) coral, named for its deep red and black coloration, reminiscent of the infamous Star Wars character. This stunning contrast makes it a highly sought-after coral in the reef-keeping hobby. Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Darth Maul Favia is relatively hardy and well-suited for both beginner and experienced reef keepers.
Care Guide:
- Tank Size: Suitable for nano (20+ gallons) and larger reef tanks.
- Temperament: Moderate aggression – extends sweeper tentacles at night, so ensure adequate spacing from neighboring corals.
- Lighting: Moderate to low (PAR 75-150); excessive light can cause bleaching or loss of its deep colors.
- Flow: Moderate – enough to prevent detritus buildup but not too strong to damage fleshy polyps.
- Placement: Best placed on lower rockwork or the sandbed, ensuring enough room for growth and to avoid aggression with other corals.
-
Feeding:
- Carnivorous – benefits from target feeding 1-2 times per week with mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or reef-specific coral foods.
- Gains additional nutrients from photosynthesis via its zooxanthellae.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 74-78°F (23-26°C)
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Salinity: 1.024-1.026
- Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
- Nitrate & Phosphate: Low but detectable (NO₃: 5-10 ppm, PO₄: 0.03-0.07 ppm)
- Compatibility: Best kept with other LPS corals, but ensure 3-4 inches of space to prevent nighttime sweeper tentacle attacks. Avoid placement near aggressive corals like torches, galaxea, or hydnophora.
Summary:
The Darth Maul Favia is a vibrant, hardy, and moderately aggressive LPS coral, perfect for adding dramatic contrast to a reef tank. With stable water parameters, moderate lighting, and occasional feeding, it will thrive and become a visually striking addition to any reef aquarium.
