The Copperband Butterflyfish is a stunning and elegant saltwater fish recognized by its elongated snout, vertical orange bands, and a distinctive black eyespot near its tail. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this fish is popular for its ability to control pest anemones like Aiptasia. However, it requires specialized care and can be challenging to keep due to its delicate nature and dietary needs.
Care Guide:
- Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons; 100+ gallons preferred for long-term success.
- Temperament: Peaceful, but can be timid, especially around aggressive tank mates.
- Diet: Carnivorous (Picky Eater) – prefers live or frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, blackworms, and clams. Some individuals may accept prepared foods, but many rely on live food. May eat Aiptasia anemones but is not guaranteed to do so.
-
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 74-80°F (23-27°C)
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Salinity: 1.023-1.025
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <10 ppm
- Reef Safe? With caution – may nip at LPS corals, tube worms, and feather dusters but generally leaves most corals alone.
- Tank Setup: Requires plenty of live rock for foraging and hiding spots. A well-established tank is ideal.
- Compatibility: Best with peaceful tank mates, such as clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and tangs. Avoid keeping with aggressive fish like triggers or large angelfish.
The Copperband Butterflyfish is a beautiful but delicate species that requires a mature, stable aquarium and a dedicated feeding regimen. While it can be an effective Aiptasia controller, its survival depends on consistent access to appropriate foods. This fish is best suited for experienced aquarists.
