Bumble Bee Snail
Meet the Mighty Bumble Bee Snail
The Bumble Bee Snail, a true marvel in marine aquariums, is an excellent scavenger, a voracious eater, and a creature of captivating beauty. These remarkable snails are essential for maintaining a clean, harmonious environment in your reef tank.
Cleaning Powerhouse:
Bumble Bee Snails have an impressive appetite for uneaten food and can tackle a particularly pesky nuisance - the Vermetid Snail. Their elongated trunk allows them to reach into crevices and consume these unwelcome intruders.
Small Wonder with Big Impact:
Don't let their small size fool you; Engina sp. makes a big difference. Their compact form and stunning coloration make them ideal for getting into tight spaces between rocks. Here, they diligently remove detritus, including uneaten meaty foods and decaying organisms. These tiny members of the Buccinidae family also burrow into the sand bed, effectively consuming sand-dwelling worms while contributing to substrate aeration. With their elegant black shells adorned with white to yellow bands, the Bumble Bee Snail is a true visual delight.
Habitat and Care:
For optimal care, provide ample hiding spots with room for exploration. Bumble Bee Snails thrive when they can forage undisturbed on live rock and deep sand beds. Like other invertebrates, they are sensitive to copper-based medications, high nitrate levels, and fluctuations in water parameters.
Carnivorous Diet:
The Bumble Bee Snail may be peaceful, but it is a carnivore. In the absence of sufficient food, it may consume other snails in your aquarium or indiscriminately target polychaetes, including the occasionally problematic bristleworm. In well-established systems, Bumble Bee Snails typically find enough natural food sources. However, if you notice a shortage, consider supplementing their diet with finely chopped brine or mysis shrimp and frozen meaty foods.
